Date Night

As I was flying to Orlando this weekend, I was reading a book on my Kindle Fire (yes I’m advertising) Before you put that on: 365 Daily Style Tips for Her by Llyod Boston and the day’s theme was “Create a sexy ‘date night’ outfit that sparkles for the evening – even of you’ve been married to your date for years.” I found this funny and here is why: I love dressing up but my husband hates it lol! He’ll tell me I look pretty/beautiful or whatever but he doesn’t understand why I’m making so much effort. All I want to do is have him be proud of the lady standing next to him and proud to say: “yeah! That’s my wife!” not look like I rolled out of some dumpster or shipwreck (which I never do but still). I like to keep my style simple and underrated, but my hair must be done and I must feel polished so to speak. For him, it’s more the extra time I take plus he prefers me sans make-up but as I said – polished. I may try out a fashion or two but if it doesn’t blend with what I consider to be “me” I’ll hesitate, ask mum or a friend or two and experiment with it but not let it overshadow who I am. What you see is what you get, and I hope that 4 out of 5 times that you’ve seen me only the length of my hair is the most dramatic transformation.

But isn’t that what men want anyway? A face that isn’t totally transformed when the make-up has been washed off? When the booty pads and enhanced bras come off, we don’t look half the size we portrayed? I like to think I’m keeping it as natural as possible, no matter who I’m meeting. My husband prefers when we’re “equally” dressed – jeans, t-shirt/shirt, slippers/sneakers/shoes but he knows me well enough to know that I will only do that sometimes but other times he has to step up to me :P.

As you’ll see in the pics below, I went for a somewhat vintage look for the wedding. I bought this dress for the wedding from Lulus but was going to wear another one (also from Lulus), even bought shoes for the second one but luckily they went with this one as well and hence my vintage look. I think my style can be classified as simple and sophisticated. I believe in a neutral palette for my face (I’ll add a pop of color in my eyeshadow or on my lips to change it up sometimes) but I think natural beauty should always shine through. Hubby was looking rather sharp at the wedding as well 🙂 cleans up nice when he has to :P. (He’ll probably kill me for saying that lol!)

Anyway, this advice reminded me that regardless, when you look good, you feel good and that translates to your confidence and when you have confidence in yourself, you feel like you can do anything and that is better than shying away from the world or even the people you love. Hence the date night can have a better “happy ending” than you expected 😉 LOL.

A New Challenge

I decided to do a little spring cleaning in my closet. I have this container of clothes on the top shelf in my closet that I went through and pulled out everything I know I’m no longer going to wear. After that I went through my skirts and shorts. Next was what was actually hanging up in the closet. I decided to pull out stuff I won’t wear and I realised I had a lot clothes (mainly dresses) I hadn’t worn yet. So I put them on one wall and left everything that I have worn on the other side (my closet isn’t big but it’s shaped weird). When I was finished, something hit me – most of the clothes are for Spring/Summer so why not create a little challenge for myself – I’ll limit myself with my clothing purchases (shoes and accessories are allowed) but I have to wear everything in there at least once.

I’m not even finished with sorting clothes. I still have clothes on the guest bed and in an under-bed bag to go through and other drawers but for the most part I don’t think I will need to purchase anything for my Spring/Summer wardrobe.  This will also give me the chance to be more creative with how I wear my clothes so I don’t feel like I’m wearing the same thing all the time or have the same look.

It’s also nice to do this because I often feel like I don’t have enough space but it’s hard when you have wardrobes for different seasons. Sweaters take up so much space and that means I have to be very selective with what I’m going to store somewhere else especially if I know I may be needing it soon. For example, I couldn’t pack all of my Summer stuff when Fall/Winter rolled around because I was going home (80F-90F weather) so now most of the clothes on the guest bed are from that trip. But I want to go through everything before I decide where they are going. My Spring cleaning is a little early but with this head start it should hopefully get easier as time goes on.

I’ve created a little wishlist of accessories that I’d love to get before the end of the year. I’ve decided not to spear any expense because I want these to be timeless pieces that last and aren’t worn out by the end of one season. I’ve got two other huge items that I’m going to keep secret for now as I don’t want to get too excited about it then I don’t get them lol, but these I know I’m getting for sure!

  1. A travel tote – Michael Kors “Hamilton” Large tote
  2. A regular tote – L.L. Bean Boat and Tote medium bag
  3. Black Ballet flats – Tory Burch “Reva” flat

So here lies my challenge to you as well – (unless it’s really unique) try to skip on the spur of the moment dress and go for accessories, something to go with that piece at home that you bought last year but haven’t worn yet <– that’s my goal. I’m definitely a spur of the moment buyer but I’m going to stop and just try to save up for my more expensive purchases one time. A deal is a deal so I’ll definitely keep looking out for them and so should you ;).

“Fall” On me

I know I’ve been absent for a while and I had to deal with some stuff so I had to put blogging on hold. Plus, I don’t want to adopt the attitude of writing just for the sake of it if I’m not feeling somewhat 100%. I’ve been at 65% this week and I was just waiting to get a little higher. The sun made an appearance today and that has helped somewhat as we have been truly been experiencing Fall with all it’s rain and chill glory. As I type, I’m in socks, jeans, a thermal tee and a nice thick robe over that to make sure I feel warm and cozy. I HATE to feel cold – I am from the Caribbean, enough said.

Even though I haven’t been able to workout this week, I had to get out of the house so I’d spent my time looking for a few fall/winter must-haves that I realized were necessary after I switched up my closet. I finally got a pair of casual wedge booties. That was a very hard task as my ankles are quite small and I HATE looking like I have the boniest ankles and they’re swimming in my boots – because other people do it and are fine with it doesn’t mean I have to as well. I was searching since the end of August.  I don’t like wearing my mid calf flats all the time and after all I’m still trying to build the average Fall/Winter must haves since I’m still relatively new to this whole thing.

I was also looking for a short coat as I only have one to my mid thigh and 3 pleather jackets (I ain’t foolin’ myself or anyone else and they don’t keep me that warm when it gets colder anyway). So I decided to just get something that I can wear when I don’t need all of the coverage my other coat gives me. And my petite-ish frame makes this another “fun” task as arms can be pretty long or I can’t find my size in the one coat I love. I’ve also been trying to stock up on a few more sweaters as I just wanted a few to fit into the little change my wardrobe has made fashion wise. I’ll probably buy them periodically throughout winter but for now I think I’m pretty satisfied with what I have. It probably sounds like I’ve been doing quite a bit of shopping and I won’t lie, I kinda have, but it’s rather frustrating when you have to spend so much time looking for things when you don’t fit the average size – it has been bittersweet.

Gym is next week  and would you believe I missed it? I really wanted to get in there but that isn’t the best idea right now. I think I’ll just dive into it again next week but hopefully over the weekend I’ll be able to just sneak in for a minute or two and feel refreshed.

In light of the passing of Steve Jobs and my reflective nature these last few days/weeks, I’ll like to end with this quote.

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. – Steve Jobs
