What I’ve learned living in Seattle

What I’ve learned living in Seattle

Technically I live in Bellevue but it’s still “part” of Seattle. Anyway, as I was driving on the road recently I was observing the weather which led to me consider writing the post. So here are a few things I’ve learned while living in Seattle since 2009.

~~

Weather

Compared to what I grew up knowing as rain, Seattle has more of a mist than actual rain. And it’s annoying. You keep getting this feeling like will it just rain and stop? It’s sooo annoying to have this “heavy mist” building up on your face. To light for an umbrella but heavy enough to need a hood. Sometimes, you can still wear sandals in it. Yes it’s weird like that. However, despite the more gloomy than sunny days, I have grown extremely appreciative of the sun as well as sensitive. I grew up in the sun and now if I stay out in it too long (even if it isn’t hot) my skin gets really sensitive to the touch. I’m trying to be consistent with taking my Vitamin D, because Lord knows I don’t get enough of it naturally. I’m learning to live with the cold and found out layering is key. I haven’t perfected layering to deal with the weather but I’m getting there.

Driving

NEVER blow your horn… never. For you will be wrong. Yes! YOU will be wrong if you toot your horn at someone who’s been sitting still at the green light. You will be wrong for doing it to someone who put on their signal while changing over to your lane. You just don’t blow your horn here. If you do, you’re a foreigner. I’ve somewhat adapted though, I count to 10 first then blow the horn if you haven’t move so, technically, I gave you a chance.

Lifestyle

People here are very zen, there isn’t much of a rush (except during Christmas). This also relates to the driving it seems. People are very laid back and it’s not about “look at me!” – you have every right to express yourself as you see fit. If there is a lot of plastic surgery I don’t see it and feel free to carry any designer label while looking like you just got out of bed, don’t make any effort to say I showered. It’s hard to get dressed up around here. It would have to be for a occasion or Saturday night. Women here don’t do heavy make-up unless they work at a make-up counter or that’s how they express themselves, but the majority doesn’t.

One of the places I encounter this “I live in a bubble” attitude is at the gas station I go to, where people are intent on getting to a certain pump and have no regard for the fact that they are blocking the road. They’re basically saying “you need to find a way around me as I’m not moving because I’m next”. Now honestly, the gas station isn’t the only thing there, you have a supermarket and mini strip mall, we just want to pass and obviously that’s hard with traffic coming down and you sticking out in the road just because you have to be next in line! I encounter some of the most selfish drivers on this road daily and it’s scary more than anything. I truly believe that a lot of people live in bubbles and only see themselves on the road. For that reason, I try not be on the road close to lunch time as traffic increases and these hungry people need to dash out for lunch and get back to the office within an hour and here you see the extremes – the crazy drivers and the ones who aren’t in a rush and drive well below the speed limit. I play music… it’s the only thing that helps my road rage. I’ll end that there 😛

Outdoors

Now Washington is known as the “evergreen state”. I am truly thankful that it’s here my husband ended up working. Despite the gloominess 300 out of 365 days, the atmosphere is one that relaxes you. I have been able to think and write more on the days I just stare outside at the mist. However, I am NOT an outdoor person and this is one of the activities a lot of Washingtonians take part in. I have considered getting a bike, but it’s not sunny enough and I won’t be riding in the mist and cold. I also have a fear of grasses touching me because when I was younger we used to go hiking around Barbados and I broke out into a rash or just itch like crazy after going through some grass areas, so I prefer to just stay away from it. And I don’t like bugs or wildlife unless there is a cage or glass or wire separating us. So outdoors just isn’t for me but I adore the greenery around this place.

On a serious note, God knows what he’s doing when he puts us in certain places outside of what we’ve known to be our way of life for a while. Being so far away from family and friends has made me more thankful for them and also to know who my true friends are and strengthened a bond between my husband and myself. We only have each other up here and it’s been interesting growing in our marriage without the interference of family and others. If we had to pick up and go I’ll be happy wherever we go once it’s not colder than here  knowing that this adventure of life can only get better with every challenge we face, and we can only grow wiser with time.

Derp & Derpina

Yesterday was a warm-ish sunny day and my husband (Derp) went to play tennis with Harry (who I was going to call Herp but that sounded too close to herpes). Anyway, being the usual cheerleader I am for Derp I decided today was the day for us to wear our Derp and Derpina shirts we ordered from Zazzle. This was my first time ordering from them and I don’t think we’ll do it again in a hurry, after one wash the shirts looked like we washed them 10 times. But at least Derp and Derpina were out and having fun in the sun.

*If you don’t know who Derp and Derpina are I suggest looking them up and also rage comics*

Today is supposed to be our warmest day for the year so far and I’d like to walk to the cinema to see Think Like A Man that’s if we don’t leave too late.

What do you have planned for today? Whatever you do, have a great Sunday and give thanks! 🙂

Yada, Yada, Yada

I figured I’d take the time today to just throw some random stuff out there 🙂 and thank you for your support of my blog of rambling.. it’s just a dash of everything after all ;).

I finally got black flats! *Yay!* I don’t remember if I mentioned what happened to the last pair I bought but it basically went like this:

I went to the mall while my husband had a casual business meeting, so while I was waiting for him to pick me up after I finished what I went there to do, I was walking around Nordstrom looking for some flats. Spring was around the corner and I wanted some as I was tired of boots. At first I called him and told him to come inside because I couldn’t decide on a pair, then I found a pair and told him don’t bother, I’ll meet him outside so he doesn’t have to park. When we got home, I tried on the shoes and showed him… you can basically say he fell off the chair laughing.. (*side note* my husband thinks all flats are granny shoes and they all look bad but some just look worse than others) He told me to return them and we’ll go shopping for a pair together. Now, I know my husband and I knew he wasn’t going to go so it took me a little while but I kept looking and I found these babies: The Cole Haan ‘Air Monica’ Ballet Flat *Angels singing: Ahhhhhhhhhhhh*

Having these shoes are major for me right now because I’m supposed to be taking a break from heels. I twisted my ankle 3 times (yes 3, in a row) running to the car in my shoes on my birthday night… please don’t ask what happened, it just happened… So my chiropractor asked me to take a break, I can wear heels if I have to but preferably wear flats. *sigh* But these are super comfy! I was looking at the Tory Burch flats but they were rubbing on my big toe on the right foot and had to be broken in, I wasn’t paying $200+ to break in shoes so I made sure I got a pair I could run a marathon in. I don’t do marathons.

Next, I got highlights. No pics yet, I’m getting a cut in two weeks when I go for my relaxer so I’ll post a pic of that then. I’m really excited about my hair and miserable at the same time. Last weekend I was a bit obsessed with a certain hairstyle.. plaits! I washed my hair Friday and seeing that it’s always puffy, I tried to tame it and do something different. I was tired of the middle and side part and was definitely not curling it so I decided to do two plaits and pull them back. Saturday was a single plait across the front, and Sunday ended the little phase with two again.  Hubby decided he doesn’t care if I grow or cut but just don’t go pixie short again. I think I’ll go through with growing but I am getting frustrated and I will continue to look for ways to not feel as bored with it. Here’s a pic of Friday’s hair and outfit :).

Speaking of clothes, I ordered some shirts for my husband. He’s a software engineer so he’s pretty casual with what he wears to work and he loves shirts that have sayings on them. I ordered from a site that when you buy 3 you get 3 free so I got 5 for him and one for me. I’m dying to wear this shirt to a vegan place or somewhere where people aren’t huge fans of meat (is that mean? if it is I’ll only do it once ;)).

I have another shirt coming and I can only post that when hubs wears his as well as we’ll be matching and it’s kind of nerdy lol. I’m turning into a slight nerd since he makes me find out a lot of technical stuff on my own and only helps if I really fork it up lol.

I got my nails done yesterday before highlights. I was trying liquid gel over my natural nails and that didn’t work out. You see, I don’t believe in wearing gloves while washing up because I like to feel the surface of things to make sure the soap is off as well as any fine residue. Even when I use my dishwasher I’m running water over the wares before I put them in and I’m always washing my hands, so even though my nails are hard, they weaken with the water and break and split. So yesterday I decided to just put gel powder on them since that’s the only thing that does last longer than anything else. I had to get tips and cut off my nails as the girl took off a lot of my natural nail removing the liquid gel. I like my nails to look nice, I don’t always make a full on effort when I leave home but I think certain things should be… kept – eyebrows and nails. I went for a slight barbie pink and got quite a few compliments on it. I’ll keep these up and hopefully grow out the tips and just keep the gel on with my natural nails.

Oh I forgot to update! Hubs said he would do my make-up but not on camera *womp* I’ll see if I can get him to do it but hide the camera lol. And last but not least, I’m becoming a Belieber… if you don’t like this song, something is wrong with you!

xx 🙂
